Miss Aiko is having a big year. From being featured on Big Sean's award-winning mixtape, Detriot, again on his album with the smash single "Beware" (which also features Lil Wayne) and then on Drake's most recent album-gone-platinum, Nothing Was The Same, Jhené is moving up at a huge rate. From that, she has been added to Drake's Would You Like A Tour, along with Future and Miguel.
When her EP went on iTunes, I IMMEDIATELY downloaded it. 5.99 for 7 HIGH-QUALITY songs? Can't beat that...especially when I saw it featured the TDE all-stars Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar!!
1. The Vapors (feat. Vince Staples) - The intro song immediately brings you into the whole mood of the EP. It features a rap verse from her fellow California native Vince Staples. It is a real cool, chill song. She found a way to relate a relationship to smoking weed with the repeating hook "Can I get it again?" with now vaporizors being the new fad to the average stoner...since its no secret the two of them smoke their fair share of weed.
2. Bed Peace (feat. Childish Gambino) - This was the first song I heard that she released early off the EP. This romantic piece (no pun intended) is a great collab between the two...stories of a couple sharing the bed and all the wonders that happen there. Who doesn't find peace in their bed? Who ever actually wants to leave their bed for that matter??
3. Stay Ready [What A Life] (feat. Kendrick Lamar) - Whenever these two link up, it's always magic. If you didn't know previously, they have made quite a few songs together in their past, as they are both LA natives and have been featured on eachother's previous projects (besides Good Kid m.A.A.d City). They never fail me...I love how their wavy styles mesh so well. Great verse by Kendrick! (Did I even need to say that though?..)
4. Wth (feat. Ab-Soul) - I think this was my favorite song off the EP. Before hearing the song, I thought Wth would stand for "What the hell" but then after I heard the song I thought "Wow..Why the fuck would they name that their song?". "Wth" means "Way Too High" in this case, which is way cooler than what I thought haha. Perfect track for the two..They also collaborate frequently, as she has been featured on Ab-Soul's last two projects.
5. The Worst - She released visuals for this song today (Video posted below). I like the song a lot! It kind of sounds similar to the song she did on Drake's album "From Time", which was one of my favorites on that album! It tells her story of the worst things a guy has done to her, but she can't help but want them. A song almost everyone can relate to!
6. 3:16 AM - I'll let Jhené explain this one...“i was born on March 16th . 3:16 is a popular bible verse that i believe in… but on the contrary… 3am is a dark hour… strong urges to want to leap off a building… this song is about real life depression, addiction, destructive love and suicide… it was a dark time for me + i smoked a lot of weed while i wrote it . - Jhené Aiko” Very powerful!!
7. Comfort Inn Ending [Freestyle] - Jhene is talking about past relationships that the guys end up screwing her over. She sounds like she was talking to herself, and then talking about herself. The story takes place at a Comfort Inn...if you didn't get that! Jhené also said to "watch out" because this story will probably go on forever..Can't wait to hear it all!
Most of the EP's production was handled by her go-to guy Fisticuffs, aside from Comfort Inn Ending, which was produced by the legendary No I.D.! This was a great prequel to her album Souled Out, which is expected to come out early 2014...as she said it has been completed for the most part. Great work Miss Aiko! Stay true to that unique sound you have!
