The New England Patriots have broke headlines today by restructuring the contract of their future Hall of Fame signal caller. Brady, who was going to have a $21.8 million hit against the New England salary cap has reduced that by $8 million this year, and $7 million for 2014.
This contract will keep Brady with the organization until he is 40 years old. For the second time since 2005, Brady did what players of his stature simply do not do. Restructure his contract to what pays him well under market value for his talents. The details behind his contract as per Peter King, consist of an immediate $3 million singing bonus, and reduces his cap numbers from $43.6 million for the next two years to $28.6 million.
Look at what Brady said last time he took an undervalue contract to help his team, "To be the highest-paid, or anything like that, is not going to make me feel any better, That's not what makes me happy. In this game, the more one player gets, the more he takes away from what others can get. Is it going to make me feel any better to make an extra million, which, after taxes, is about $500,000? That million might be more important to the team." This cap freedom allows the Patriots to make a run at defensive free agents such as Dwight Freeney formerly of the Colts, and Ed Reed of the Ravens. Oh yeah and that one target that Brady as grown fond of over the past few years, Wes Welker, yeah he's a free agent this year as well.
